PM addresses Parliament following informal on migration

Addressing the House following the informal meeting on migration and other asylum issues, where 16 Member State leaders attended the meeting called by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that he proposed that Operation Sophia takes on more of a central role and the Libyan authorities are given more of a chance to do what is expected of them. He was speaking in the context that a balance needed to be struck between humanitarian concerns – where saving lives should be a priority – and security.

Dr Muscat said that the Italian Prime Minister put forward a number of proposals, which should be considered, however added that many of the proposals have been agreed already and are being implemented.
