On April 24, the EU Commission approved of a €215 million wage subsidies scheme to support companies operating in sectors that have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.
The aim of the scheme is to preserve employment and avoid lay-offs of employees at a time when many business activities are either suspended or significantly reduced.
The scheme will be accessible to companies of all sizes and self-employed individuals operating in sectors that are strongly affected by the current crisis and the containment measures adopted by national authorities.
All this happened following Maltese authorities’ notification to the EU Commission under the Temporary Framework detailing the setting-up of a scheme to finance wage costs of employers that, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, would otherwise have laid off their employees.
The Commission concluded that the Maltese measure is necessary, appropriate and proportionate to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy.
