COVID-19: Preventing scams and Protecting Consumers

The European Commission is working tirelessly to protect consumers online. COVID-19 has brought with it an unprecedented level of uncertainty which has led to a rise in promotion of false claims or scam products.

To this end, the Commission has launched a number of screenings of online platforms and advertisements to ensure that consumers in the European Union are not being subjected to content that is misleading.

Online platforms (Allegro, Amazon, AliExpress, Microsoft/Bing, CDiscount, Ebay, Facebook, Google, Rakuten, Wish and Yahoo/Verizon media) have responded positively and demonstrated a strong commitment take down misleading and illegal advertising, thereby protecting consumers.

These checks will be carried out by the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network of national authorities.
