European Union leaders meet via video-conference

On June 19, European Union Heads of State or Government, including Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, met via video conference for a European Council meeting.

During this meeting issues related to the recovery fund which will respond to the COVID-19 crisis and the European Union’s new long-term budget (2021-2027) were discussed. Leaders present for the meeting also touched upon EU-UK relations in view of the United Kingdom’s full departure from the European Union at the end of this year.

Around mid-July, the European Council will convene again, this time at a physical summit in Brussels and it is then that discussions will shift towards concrete proposals to be taken through the recovery plan and the Multi-annual Financial Framework.

European Council President Charles Michel remarked that it is essential to take decisions in the shortest time possible to ensure Europe’s swift recovery.

Those present were also briefed by the European Council President and the European Commission President about recent discussions held with United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson on June 15.
