Chancellor Angela Merkel present German Presidency priorities to the European Parliament

On July 8, German Chancellor Angela Merkel together with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, exchanged views with Member of the European Parliament on the proposed strategy and goals of the current Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Nicknamed the ‘Coronavirus Presidency’ the current Presidency chose the motto “Together for Europe’s recovery”.

Determined to tackle the challenges imposed by the pandemic, Merkel highlighted a number of areas Europe needs to work on including, fundamental rights, solidarity and cohesion, climate change, digitisation, and Europe’s role in the world.

In her statement, Chancellor Merkel explained that she hopes the European Union can recover from the pandemic and emerge unified and stronger.
