Belarus Elections – the EU responds

European Council President Charles Michel has called on all European Union Heads of State or Government to discuss the ongoing situation in Belarus.

Following the August 9 elections in Belarus, the situation has continued to evolve negatively. In his statement prior to the meeting, President Michel said that the elections were neither free nor fair. The subsequent violence which took place and which affected peaceful protestors is to be condemned. In reply, the European Union has already started work on a number of sanctions.

The people of Belarus, just like all European Union citizens, have the right to determine their own future. For this to take place, violence must end immediately and peaceful and inclusive dialogue must be launched.

European Council members will now be assessing and discussing how best to respond to this evolving situation.
