Buildings are responsible for about 40% of the EU’s energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions. To-date only 1% of buildings undergo energy efficient renovation on a yearly basis.
On October 14 the European Commission published the Renovation Wave Strategy. The strategy’s objective is to improve the energy performance of buildings.
The European Commission intends to at least double renovation rates in the next ten years and ensure renovations lead to higher energy and resource efficiency.
In doing so the European Commission will be hoping that the strategy will:
- Enhance the quality of life of people living in and using buildings;
- Reduce Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions;
- Foster digitalisation; &
- Improve the re-use and recycling of materials.
The strategy intends to renovate up to 35 million buildings and create 160,000 additional green jobs.
