Consultation Session: Evaluation of the Waste Shipment Regulation

03 April 2018

MEUSAC, in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change (MESDC) and the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA), organised a consultation session on the European Commission’s ongoing evaluation of the Waste Shipment Regulation.

The aim of the Regulation is to protect human health against the adverse effects of transboundary movements of waste, and to ensure that such waste is properly managed from generation to final treatment.

The ongoing evaluation looks to collect additional information as to the practical implementation of the Regulation from stakeholders and private citizens, and to identify any gaps which limit its functioning and its ability to meet its objectives. One of the main changes which is already being envisaged is to introduce measures aimed at reducing administrative burdens which concern waste shipment and recovery.

Amongst comments made by stakeholders during the session, they commented that Malta is already limited by the number of shipping lines visiting the country, and even more so as to the type of waste which the shipping lines accept for shipment.

The evaluation is currently ongoing and may be accessed by clicking here. It will run until April 27, 2018.
