A consultation session, organised by MEUSAC, was held on December 5, 2017 on GPP criteria for furniture in relation to green public procurement.
Ms Branica Xuereb from the Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change, gave an in-depth presentation on the proposed criteria.
Ms Xuereb explained that in the event some used furniture is of no use for the contractor, the furniture should be disposed of in a sustainable manner since before this criteria was proposed, there was no obligation on the contractor’s part to dispose of it in such a manner. However, there exists the option that the furniture will be offered to third parties in a fair manner so that the furniture does not go to waste. In this case, the benefactor will shoulder the transportation costs.
Stakeholders present asked whether the compliance certificate (ISO 14001) is enough to cover the new criteria to which Ms Xuereb explained that in certain cases the certification is not enough due to the different requirements such as in the case of legal timber sourcing.
Interestingly, more than 80 million m3 of timber was harvested illegally in 2014, according to Chatham House. Also, when it comes to warranty and spare parts, a three-year product warranty and five years for spare part availability, are required.
