On Thursday, December 14, 2017 MEUSAC, in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change (MESDC), organised a consultation session on Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria for the textiles industry.
The objective of the session was to introduce contracting authorities and economic operators to the revision of criteria relating to the procurement of textile products and services. The revised criteria shall eventually be incorporated into the 2nd National Action Plan (NAP).
The GPP criteria for textiles have been republished by the European Commission in 2017, whereas the previous GPP criteria were launched in early 2012. The revised criteria have a modified and expanded scope to include cleaning products and non-fibre items such as zips, buttons and accessories. Another major amendment to the criteria relates to the weight threshold by means of which products classify under GPP requirements. This weight threshold was lowered from 90% to 80%. By doing so, alignment was ensured with the EU Ecolabel and the Textiles Names Directive (EU) 1007/2011.
