Consultation Session: Strengthening the agri-food chain in Europe

03 December 2013

The Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee (MEUSAC) organised a consultation session on the ‘Proposal for a Regulation on official controls and other official activities performed to ensure the application of food and feed law, rules on animal health and welfare, plant health, plant reproductive material, plant protection products’.

The purpose of this consultation session was to seek stakeholders’ views on the European Commission’s proposed Regulation on official controls, which would replace the existing Regulation and adopt measures aimed at strengthening the enforcement of health and safety standards for the whole agri-food chain. All businesses and relevant stakeholders operating within the plant, animal and food sectors (the agri-food chain) and enforcement bodies carrying out official controls (competent authorities) were invited. Food safety is essential to ensure consumers’ confidence and the sustainability of food production.

Various interventions and comments from the audience were made in relation to the likely impacts of the changes being proposed on consumers and industry, in particular food and feed businesses.

The consultation session was held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the Naxxar Local Council.
