A social Europe is important for Europeans
Article published in Voice of the Workers Weekly
The results
of a special Eurobarometer survey, issued earlier this year to gauge
the attitudes of Europeans on social issues in the EU, revealed that 88% of
Europeans (including Maltese respondents) consider a social Europe to be
important to them personally.
The survey showed
that Europeans continue to legitimately hold to the promise of a
high-performing social market economy, with jobs that make for a secure and
decent living.
When it comes
to the most pressing social issues, European citizens chose the following in
this order: equal opportunities and access to the labour market; fair working
conditions, and; access to quality healthcare. Maltese respondents prioritise
the standard of living before going for the other issues.
Maltese
respondents also have divergent views on what they consider to be the most
important social issue for Europe in the future. While healthcare is the most
important issue for the rest of Europeans, for Maltese respondents, work-life
balance is the most important concern.
