‘Fit for 55’ – Delivering on Climate Targets

The EU’s commitment to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 by cutting emissions by at least 55% by 2030, requires a revision of the EU’s climate, energy and transport. This is being addressed through the proposed through a set of EU legislation, called the ‘Fit for 55’ package.

The package of proposals aims to put in place new initiatives with the aim of ensuring that EU policies are in line with the climate goals to substantially reduce current greenhouse gas emission levels.

The Fit for 55 package includes a revision of legislative proposals and policy initiatives among which: the EU emissions trading system, extending it to aviation and shipping, road transport and buildings; reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and removals from land use, land use change and forestry; renewable energy; energy efficiency; alternative fuels infrastructure; CO2 emission standards for cars and vans; energy taxation; carbon border adjustment mechanism.

The package aims at providing a coherent and balanced framework for reaching the EU's climate objectives, which is fair and socially just, maintains and strengthens innovation and competitiveness of EU industry while ensuring a level playing field vis-à-vis third country economic operators.
