EU Corner at Science in the City Festival

For the tenth consecutive year, SEM and Europe Direct Valletta set up an EU Corner at the Science in the City (SitC) Festival, which took place on September 30 at the granaries of Fort St Elmo, Valletta.

The festival was part of ‘European Researchers’ Night’ – an EU-wide event which takes place in over 30 countries and 300 cities simultaneously. It is funded by the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Framework Programme H2020 (2014-2020) under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions.

This year’s EU Corner consisted of hands-on experiments, EU publications on the EU’s work in research and science, and the European Parliament in virtual reality.

This year’s theme of the festival, ‘Taking Root’ emphasised how important it is for every citizen to feel the responsibility to contribute to the goals set out by the EU for a sustainable and resilient future, based on a scientific approach to finding and implementing solutions to the challenges we are facing.

This year’s EU Corner consisted of the following sections:

  1. EU-funded projects from the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action Programme, covering research by University of Malta Marie Curie Fellows, on submarine gravity flows, the challenges of rock and soil spreading, climate impact on arthropod (insects, spiders, etc.) habitats of small islands, and food waste.
  2. A virtual reality experience of the European Parliament by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta.
  3. EU Publications on general EU themes and specific themes on research and science.
