Citizens’ Expo by Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta and Europe Direct Valletta

Europe Day 2023 was marked in Freedom Square Valletta with a half day of activities organised by SEM and Europe Direct Valletta. The event served to showcase the benefits and opportunities for EU citizens in Malta and Gozo, mainly through EU funds and through EU-related services.

The public event brought together in one place several entities which offered visitors information and assistance on how EU funds are invested in Malta and Gozo for a better quality of life as well as what opportunities are offered for individuals, enterprises, NGOs, youths and local councils, amongst others.

The following were the entities represented: SEM, Fondi.eu, Europe Direct Valletta, European Commission Representation and European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta, European Union Agency for Asylum, European Employment Services (EURES), SOLVIT Malta, European Consumers Centre; Entitlement Unit (Ministry for Health), EU Careers, Europass and myScholarships.

The event kicked off with a performance by students from the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School, followed by a press conference by the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds, Dr Chris Bonett. Speeches were also delivered by Denise Fiorentino – CEO of SEM, Mark Vella – Head of Communications of the European Commission Representation Malta, and Mario Sammut – Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta.

A quiz for secondary school students participating in the Student Ambassadors Programme of the European Parliament was also held. Students from Gozo College, Marija Reġina College Mosta, St Ignatius College Ħandaq, St Clare’s College Pembroke, St Augustine College, St Martin’s College, St Joseph School and St Dorothy’s School were tested on their knowledge of the European Union.

The event was organised in collaboration with the European Parliament Liaison Office and the European Commission Representation in Malta.
