Roberta Metsola elected President of the European Parliament

The first Maltese national to occupy the highest position in one of the top EU institutions

Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola has been elected as President of the European Parliament for the next two and a half years, leading to the next European elections in 2024.

She is the first Maltese national to occupy this highest position in one of the top institutions of the European Union. She is also the third woman to occupy such a position in the history of the European Parliament.

The President oversees the work of the Parliament and its constituent bodies as well as the debates in plenary and ensures that Parliament’s Rules of Procedure are adhered to.

The President of the European Parliament represents the institution with the other EU institutions and relations with the outside world.

At the beginning of every European Council meeting, the President of the European Parliament sets out Parliament’s point of view and its concerns as regards the items on the agenda and other subjects.

The President also signs the European Union’s budget after its adoption by Parliament.
