The general objective of the Proposal for a directive on road infrastructure management is to address the shortcomings of existing legislation in reducing road fatalities and serious injuries by improving the safety performance of road infrastructure.

European Commission

On May 17 2018, the European Commission published a Proposal amending Directive 2008/96/ EC on road infrastructure safety management to promote safe mobility.

European Parliament

The proposal was assigned to the TRAN committee within the EP which adopted its report on the proposal on January 10, 2019.

Council of the EU

The Proposal was discussed in the Council Working Party on Land Transport which agreed on a General Approach on December 3, 2018

Negotiation Stage

Interinstitutional negotiations resulted in a provisional agreement on February 21, 2019.  The provisional agreement was agreed by COREPER on February 27, 2019 and the TRAN Committee on March 4, 2019.  The European Parliament adopted the provisional agreement during plenary on April 4, 2019.

Final Adoption

Political Agreement reached between the President of the EP and the President of the Council on 7 October 2019. Item due to be rubberstamped in COREPER.
