‘Be Creative, Break the Barrier’

Erasmus+ Funds for Special Education through SEM assistance

With the assistance of SEM, the San Miguel Primary Education Resource Centre in Pembroke acquired EU funds of over €106,000 for a project that equips educators with skills on the use of drama in special education.

The project aims to empower special education teachers to make new or better use of drama in their teaching techniques, through training and the exchange of good practices.

Involving the participation of schools from five different countries – Malta, Turkey, Italy, Lithuania and Poland – the project consisted of five Learning, Teaching and Training activities, each focusing on a different area: creative drama; multi-modal drama techniques; stage design; story-based drama; body language and integrating drama across the curriculum.

This project will respond to a knowledge lacuna felt by special education teachers across the five participating countries which currently have different levels of creative drama application and niche expertise in their own schools.

As a result, the teaching methods and the quality of education given to students with learning disabilities will be improved.

The project was presented by the Head of San Miguel Resource Centre and project coordinator, Dr Marica Gatt, to the Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Carmelo Abela and SEM CEO Mandy Falzon. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Education and Sport, Matthew Vella, the President of the School Council, George Borg, and Head EU Funding at SEM, Darren Grasso were also present, together with educators and participants in the project were also present for the event.
