Students’ Visit to the Grandmaster’s Palace

Organised with the support of Heritage Malta

Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta, with the support of Heritage Malta, organised an educational outing for secondary school students to the Grandmaster’s Palace. Through the visit, on April 22, the students could better understand how EU funds are used for the preservation of our heritage, while appreciating and learning about our history.

The students from St Thomas More College, Żejtun Secondary School, had the opportunity to explore the newly restored Grandmaster's Palace in the heart of Valletta - a symbol of Malta's rich history. Originally built by the Knights of St John, the Palace served various purposes over the centuries, including housing Malta's first parliament. Thanks to restoration efforts partly funded by EU funds, visitors can now explore over eighty-five percent of the palace, including its stunning State Rooms and the historic Armoury, and observe the stunning Baroque ceiling paintings.

The visit started off with an informative tour of the Palace, allowing the students to understand the significance of such a building, as well as the historic artefacts it safeguards.

A SEM executive explained to the students what EU funds are and how these are used locally and then participated in a short quiz about the topic. In answering these questions, the students had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of EU funds and appreciate the benefits of such initiatives.
