Students’ Visit to Tal-Kampanjol Aquaponics Farm

Educational visit to showcase how EU funds are being used

During 2024, Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta is organising educational outings for secondary school students to sites which have benefitted from EU funds. Through these visits, the students can understand better how EU funds are used for the preservation of our heritage, while appreciating and learning about our history and environment.

On April 23, a group of students from St Jeanne Antide College Immaculate Conception Secondary School, visited Tal-Kampanjol Aquaponics Farm in Ħaż Żebbuġ, the first of its kind in the Maltese Islands.

The innovative farmers at Tal-Kampanjol have taken a different path, moving towards a farming system that is more sustainable - environmentally, economically and socially, using science-based practices that maximize productivity while minimizing environmental damage thanks to EU funds. All their produce is locally grown in a sustainable way, without the use of pesticides, herbicides or harmful chemicals, using 90% less water, recycle nutrients and have a zero-discharge recirculating system. Over 95% of their energy needs are produced via renewable energy.

The students were given the opportunity to explore the farm and were given detailed information on how such a project could kick off back in 2014 thanks to various EU funding programmes. Finally, the students were given a booklet prepared by SEM with a short quiz regarding the European Union and EU funds. In answering these questions, the students had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of EU funds and appreciate the benefits of such initiatives.
