Exploring Malta’s EU Journey with Students

SEM hosts a group of students from Carlo Zuccante Technical Institute in Mestre

Servizzi Ewropej F’Malta (SEM) had the pleasure of hosting a group of 30 Italian students from Carlo Zuccante Technical Institute in Mestre, Italy who were on a study visit to Malta. The session, designed to shed light on Malta’s membership in the European Union, proved to be both educational and engaging.

The presentation began with a warm welcome from SEM officials, who provided a brief yet comprehensive overview of Malta and the EU. This introduction set the stage for a deeper dive into Malta’s journey within the EU, highlighting the nation’s milestones and significant achievements since its accession.

To offer the students a thorough understanding, the SEM officials outlined the major milestones that Malta has achieved since joining the EU in 2004. They delved into various sectors such as economic growth, infrastructure development, and progress in a variety of sectors like education, transport, water management and agriculture, illustrating how EU membership has positively impacted the island nation. The discussion also included key moments like the introduction of the euro in 2008, and Malta’s active role in various EU institutions.

The session included a short quiz with multiple-choice questions which not only reinforced the information shared but also sparked discussions among the students. SEM officials facilitated these discussions, encouraging students to ask questions and share their perspectives.

By the end of the session, the Italian students had gained a comprehensive understanding of Malta’s membership in the EU with a newfound appreciation for the island nation’s strategic importance within the EU framework and the tangible benefits that EU membership has brought to Malta.
